Discover Britain with a Trip to its More Unusual Destinations

By: Adam Singleton

The UK is a beautiful place to take a well-earned break. Featuring breathtaking scenery and some fascinating attractions, there is so much to experience. However, when it’s on your doorstep year round, it can sometimes be hard to summon the inspiration to find somewhere new or exciting to visit. But, with just a little research, you can turn an ordinary holiday into something truly memorable.

Indeed, why not set yourself the challenge of visiting as many strange sounding places as you can find? A quick search will leave you more than a little amused and definitely full of ideas of where to take your next holiday!

For example, have you ever gone walking in Sockburn, taken the dog for a run in Barking or eaten lunch in Sandwich? Or perhaps you’ve stopped for a pint in Once Brewed, you know, the town near Twice Brewed?

If you fancy something a bit more exotic, then why not head to Egypt or California? Don’t worry; you needn’t bother with a long-haul flight across the Atlantic. With Egypt based in Hampshire and California in Norfolk, you are but a mere hop, skip and a jump away from taking that yearned for holiday, without the travel hassle and certainly no jet lag!

Perhaps Frisby on the Wreake is more your cup of tea? With picturesque scenery, medieval architecture and the accolade of Best Village in Leicestershire, 2005, it is definitely worth a visit. You may even be able to find a park to toss around an actual Frisbee! And for a more relaxed holiday, Little Snoring could just be the ticket. Home to one of the 124 round-tower churches, it is a charming village based in Norfolk.

Travel a bit further north and you will stumble upon Amble-by-the-Sea. Lying at the mouth of the River Coquet in Northumberland it offers the visitor the chance to wander along the shores of its beautiful beaches. Not only that, but it also holds the title of ‘Friendliest Port’ so you can be sure of a good welcome.

Reportedly the windiest place in Britain - The Butt of Lewis – is located in the most northern tip of the Western isles. Offering up some amazing views, it also boasts a rather unusual looking lighthouse.

Indeed, there are simply dozens of other strange sounding places to find around Britain, not to mention street names. So, why not book yourself some time off to go exploring. Not only can you regale your friends and family with the hilarious places you have visited, but you will also have the chance to discover a whole new, quirky side to Britain!

And don’t worry, for all the unusual names, there are still a range of the more ‘usual’ amenities such as restaurants and hotels. So what are you waiting for? There is a wide range of strange towns just waiting to be visited!
