Obstructive sleep apnea can be cured in various ways in this article we look at the orally fitted devices that can be used in mild to medium cases of this sleeping disorder. A mandibular advancement dental device is one of the orally fitted options for treatment of sleep apnea. Many designs are available from various manufacturers with over ninety types that are in use today. All of these devices serve to bring a cure for sleep disorder problems and work in the same basic way with none proving to be more effective than another in any test. This is a splint style device which is adjusted to suit each individual user with the adjusting mechanism in the form of a thumb screw adjuster on each side of the piece. It is made up of an upper and lower mouth plate held together with the two adjusters at the front and a hinged connection at the rear. Its function is to hold the mouth open during sleep while moving the lower jaw into a position that is further forward than usual. This also causes the tongue to come forward at the same time as tightening the soft tissues and muscles and it’s this combination that allows the wearer to have an apnea attack free sleep. Another advantage is that snoring loudly will also be prevented as the tissues on the upper mouth cannot vibrate. This vibration is the main source of loud snoring which is very uncomfortable for a partner using the same bed. This treatment is non evasive with no side effects or long term usage implications for the user with modern designs being smaller and allowing flexibility for yawning and speaking. Another oral treatment for sleeping disorders like obstructive sleep apnea is the TRD or tongue restraining device which can come in two design variations. The first is similar to the mandibular system above as it is also a splint system where the tongue is strapped in a fixed forward position in the mouth piece to allow a clear breathing rhythm for a good uninterrupted night’s sleep. The second type is one which doesn’t involve the tongue being tied in place instead it’s a mouth piece with a vacuum bulb fitted at the front which draws or sucks the tongue forward in the mouth. This is the option that provides the most freedom of jaw movement and good for people who can’t handle the restrictiveness of the other devices. In all cases treatment should not be decided on solely by the sufferer but in consultation with a doctor, dentist or sleep disorder specialist to check exactly what condition they have and the best treatment to suit that individual’s condition and state of health. Sometimes an overnight stay in an apnea clinic will be advised so that your sleep can be fully monitored for a night to give doctors an accurate view of the condition. Don’t buy an oral device direct from a store get one through a dentist or doctor that is specially made to fit your mouth otherwise a lot of discomfort can occur through an ill fitting device.
