Author and humanitarian, Tina Turbin (http://TinaTurbin.com) brought her children's book Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy to Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf (http://BlossomSchool.org) for a special day of reading and fun. Tina's was there to provide a reading of her book to young deaf children, opening a door a little wider to a group of kids who have less opportunity than other kids. Blossom School is a unique school in that a Montessori curriculum is the starting point. Adding to it are processes, materials and methodologies suited to meet each individual child's needs. The day started off with a question and answer session where the kids had many questions. They wanted to know how Tina got started as an author, how she created the book, what are her plans were and many other questions. Tina told them that when she was 16 she wrote her first book. From there she ended up getting married and having three kids of her own. Just two years ago all her kids had moved out and were on their own. At that point, Tina decided that she could put her attention on her writing and the arts. Tina described the process of creating an illustrative work and her relationship with her award winning Illustrator, Aija Jasuna and how they worked through an interpreter on long-distance calls and emails. This fascinated the kids, who had first hand experience working through interpreters. Tina went on to explain that when she began working on the book, she had a really well-defined sense of the characters including how they should look and how, through the process, the characters came to life on the pages of the book. One could see many of the kids formulating their future book ideas. After all the questions were answered, Tina read her book to the assembled students. They all loved the book and magnificent illustrations. Of course, the school's very helpful teachers translated the reading into sign language. After the reading, there were additional questions asked and answered. The kids could not get enough of Tina, her stories and explanations. After all the questions were answered Tina, with the help of the kids and staff, passed out some stickers and bookmarkers specially made for the occasion. It was obvious that a few new writing careers were placed on the launching pad via this event. Hopefully we'll see more of Tina at other schools as her presence seems to ignite young minds. A video of a signed reading of Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy is planned so that all kids can enjoy the book, even those who cannot hear. You can find Tina Turbin's book online at DannyTheDragon.com, Amazon.com, and in fine bookstores everywhere.
