Slips, trips and falls Slips, trips and falls are the most common type of injury sustained at work. Where ever you work be it in an office, shop or factory there are plenty of trip hazards no matter how good your health and safety is. Some of us are just plain clumsy and will trip over our own feet, others however trip as a result of negligence or carelessness. Burns Electricians, construction workers and other professional who find themselves working closely with electricity can be at risk from burn injuries. Some burns can be minor, though painful, but some can be far more serious including the possibility of a fatal electrocution. Those working with electricity aren’t the only people at risk, those working in kitchens and even staff waiting to make a cup of tea can accidentally burn themselves. Back and neck injuries Back and neck injuries can befall those who work in offices, drivers and professions where you sit down for the majority of the day. Stiff and painful back and necks can be caused by poor posture, lack of movement and badly designed work stations. Workers who spend most of the day standing run the risk of suffering musculoskeletal injuries. It is advised that workers take regular breaks to exercise there muscles throughout the day. Employers should make sure that adequate seating is provided that supports the lower back. RSI (repetitive strain injury) Recent research suggests that 1 in 50 workers suffer from RSI. Those workers most at risk from RSI are those who use there hands and arms for much of the day such as typists factory workers and drivers. Symptoms of RSI include numbness and pain in the wrists, arms, shoulders and neck. Vibration injury Workers who use machinery and powers tools are at risk from vibration injury commonly know as ‘white finger’. White finger causes a tingling sensation and numbness in the fingers and hands as well as turning the affected fingers and hands white. those who are most at risk of contracting white finger are construction workers, mechanics and ground workers.
