Choosing the right fishing equipment: Sea Fishing Rods

By: Sam Knee

One of the most exhilarating feelings is that of landing a huge, strong marlin, sailfish or even a shark. These fish can weigh 100s of pounds and put up quite a battle. Sailfish have been known to top 1000 pounds in some cases. Obviously, good sea fishing rods are required to boat a fish like that and here we look at the selection process.

All sea fishing rods will be constructed of a material that can take the saltwater conditions. For this reason, metal or aluminum rods are going to succumb to the salt in the air and corrode or become brittle. Better choices exist with either graphite or fiberglass as these are resistant to corrosion, rusting and brittleness.

Graphite sea fishing rods are used in some cases. Though graphite is used in other lighter rods used in freshwater fishing, it also has flexibility features that are desired in heavier, sturdier sea fishing rods. Fiberglass rods, however, provide greater flexibility and tend to be more versatile for deep sea fishing.

Although in this article we are discussing the selection of a sea fishing rod, you must also consider the tackle that you use. It is important to make sure everything complements each other so that you have the complete package required to achieve your goals. This is a key point, due to the size and power of the different types of fish you can catch whilst sea fishing.

Ensuring your rod/tackle combination is correct can be a result of the rod you choose to use or the tackle your select. Either way, once either the rod or tackle is selected then the corresponding equipment needs to make sure the combination increase your sea fishing rods' success.

The size of the fish you want to catch is important to consider when choosing a rod. The bigger the fish, the heavier the rod will need to be used. It is not advised that a lighter rod (normally used for catching grouper, snapper or flounder) is used when fishing for big fish, you will not achieve your goals and could end up with a snapped rod!

Once you have the right tackle, you know the size of the fish you want to catch, the next thing to consider is the depth the fish lives at/is active at. Specific rod types are needed to fish at different depths. The species and size of the fish all dictates the rod you choose.

It is also a good idea to visit your local fishing store that stocks sea fishing rods. This will allow you to see and feel the different types and discuss with the staff any queries you may have. Seeing the rod first hand provides a great insight when deciding on the correct rod.

To sum up, there are many sea fishing rods currently on the market, select your rod on based on the fish you want to catch.
