By: Mary L. Sure

How do you prepare your chicken coup for the cold winter months? Well, that is a very smart question. And one that we sometimes can forget, if were designing our chicken coup during the warmer months.

1) For chickens with feathers, consider the weather (in good time). If you live in a climate that is hot during the year, you don't have to concern yourself much about this. But if you live in a climate where the temperature drops way down during winter, then you must consider that in your chicken coup construction plan. How? You accomplish this by constructing the walls of the chicken coup wide enough to be able to hold insulation. (Remember to seal this off properly so that the chickens can't peck it away).

2) Pine shavings stop the birds complaining. A great way to give your hens more warmth and comfort during the cold months of the year is to spread out pine shavings over the floors and levels of the chicken coup where the birds sleep. That's a tried and true method that chickens tend to love.

3) Chickens need fresh water, not ice cubes. It's important to remember that the chickens water supply may freeze if the temperature drops to low. Make sure you place out some heating in strategic places so that the water does not freeze up.

4) Ceramic lights work magic delights. An old classic to winterize your chicken coup is to use ceramic lights. These are a special kind of devices that don't really produce any light, but instead, only heat. Which is perfect for what you want in this situation. Placing a few of these ceramic lights in strategic positions throughout the hen houses may even mean that you don't need any other form of heating.

5) Shower curtain slash wind stopper. Some chicken coup designs use shower curtains as wind stoppers. According to some sources this works very well to keep the cold winds from blowing in. Though you'll have to be the judge if you want to use this method or not, as with them all.
