The advent of the internet has brought with it many advantages for consumers and businesses alike. Indeed, from emailing and online shopping to information sharing, people now have global access to a range of data and services that were previously unimaginable. Geographical boundaries have all but been removed and on the whole, time and cost-efficiency has been greatly improved. Take the introduction of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), for instance. Having worked to revolutionise the telecommunications industry, it is a great example of the low-cost internet technology that’s available to both the everyday consumer and the business world. Such technology allows anyone from anywhere in the world - that has an internet connection - to make cheap calls, both locally and internationally; therefore, VoIP can prove an ideal solution to eliminating those huge monthly phone bills. As a result, there has been a huge increase in recent years with the number of people using the internet to speak with others. In fact, according to statistics, there were over 110 million people in the world using some form of VoIP in 2008, compared to just under 25 million in 2005. Additionally, a survey has revealed that a third of individuals in the US and Europe are expected to switch over to using wireless or broadband telephony in 2009. And with such relatively low rates being charged per minute for international calls, it is easy to see why; in addition, there is no need to take out a long-term contract. Therefore, dependent on the service you opt for, you can choose to pay as you go or to pay monthly, with no obligation to use the service for longer than you want or need to. Arguably one of the best features of VoIP is the fact one can make cheap international calls via the internet for a fraction of the price of more traditional sources. Thus, whether you need to speak with a partner who is working away from home, or a family that is travelling around the world, you can keep up with your loved ones without breaking the bank. Therefore, it is possible to minimize the amount of expensive phone bills you receive from using the features that VoIP offers. Indeed, such features include being able to make cheap international calls and low-cost local calls; in addition there is the ability to take advantage of the text messaging services and free VoIP to VoIP calls. Of course, when you have close friends and family living across various parts of the world, there is nothing more appealing than having the option of speaking to them with ease, and also at a low cost.
