Breastfeeding Benefits

By: Nita Dewi

Most babies find it easier to digest breast milk to get benefits than formula.

1. The breastfeeding benefits for the infant
Breastfed babies have a lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and have antibodies to help protect them from bacteria and viruses and to help them fight off infection and disease, and they are less likely to have colic, upper respiratory infections, ear infections, constipation, asthma or allergies. Lots of research points to the benefits of breastfeeding on a baby's intellectual development. Also, breast milk is at the right temperature and is immediately available from the breast. Nutrients and antibodies are passed to the baby while hormones are released into the mother's body. Human milk straight from the breast is always sterile.
Breast milk is the most perfect food for a baby, has the right amount of fat, sugar, water, and protein that is needed for a baby's growth and development. The longer infants are breastfed, the lower the likelihood they'll be overweight as adolescents.

The bond between baby and mother can also be strengthened during breastfeeding. The hormones released during breastfeeding strengthen the mother's nurturing feelings towards the child.

2. The breastfeeding benefits for the mother
Breastfeeding benefits the mother. Breastfeeding burns up almost 500 calories a day, helping mothers return to their pre-pregnancy weight sooner. Breastfeeding within a short time after giving birth increases levels of systemic oxytocin. As the fat accumulated during pregnancy is used in milk production, prolonged breastfeeding can help mothers to return to their previous weight. Breastfeeding must be the infant’s only (or almost only) source of nutrition.

From a financial standpoint, breastfeeding is roughly half the cost of infant formula.

If the mother is away, an alternative caregiver may be able to use expressed breast milk (EBM) to feed the baby. Also, the other caregiver must be comfortable in handling breast milk.

Don't worry that the baby will breastfeeding forever - all babies wean eventually, no matter what the mother do. Whether the mother nurses her baby for days, weeks, months, or years, the mother will both benefit. Some mothers are hesitant to begin breastfeeding if they know they won't nurse their babies for long.
