Be Aware Of This When Learning How To Give A Massage

By: Michael Tasker

Discovering the techniques and methods of how to give a massage will reward you with a skill that will always be in demand, yet there are some very important issues that you must be aware of before you utilise the new found healing power in your hands. You need to be aware of any risks or side effects involved and whether it should be a substitute for conventional medicine.

Before giving anyone a massage you must satisfy yourself that it is in fact safe for the person to receive such treatment. The person's doctor will be able to inform them of any contraindications that must be adhered to in order to avoid unnecessary risk if there is any doubt. With such medical conditions as deep vein thrombosis, bleeding disorders or if the person has been prescribed blood-thinning drugs, it is advisable that they should not undertake massage therapy. It is the same for those people who suffer from osteoporosis or if a bone fracture has recently been suffered.

Other conditions to be aware of that massage is not recommended to be administered are signs of a fever, an open injury that can lead to infection or is already infected, inflammation of the skin or muscle, plus more obvious conditions such as pregnancy. Once the condition of the person has been determined, you will also have to be aware of the chances of side effects appearing from undertaking a massage. This can take the form of the person having to endure some temporary discomfort, plus the therapy may result in some bruising or swelling of the skin or muscles, though this should be able to be monitored by asking the person if they are feeling discomfort in any way. It is important to remember that some people have sensitive skin which may have a reaction to the use of massage oil, which may also include an allergic reaction.

Whilst massage therapy does provide lasting benefits, both physical and mental, a person should not view it as a guaranteed substitute for regular medical care nor should you, as the person able to provide massage therapy techniques, suggest to others that massage is the cure for a particular ailment and their regular medical care should cease. It is acknowledged that this therapy can provide relief for ailments such as muscle and joint pain without having recourse to prescribed medication though the person should not ignore the advice of their doctor as to what is the best course of action.

Discovering the first steps of how to give a massage is now very easy and the benefits can now be offered by you to your friends and family. Imagine having the skill to offer relief from pain and discomfort in muscles and joints, which in turn results in a feeling of wellbeing, not just physical but mental as well. An easy step by step method of learning is by closely following the techniques demonstrated by a professional masseur which gives you the chance to gain and improve your skills to the benefit of many.
