Baroque and Bustling Nice

Nice is the bright, breezy and busy unofficial capital of the Cote d’Azur and makes a picturesque Provencal location to visit for history, culture and relaxation. This French city is easily accessed from the rest of Europe and further afield. The proximity of Cote d'Azur Airport to the city centre is beneficial at just four miles to the west. It’s an attractive trip into Nice from the airport, as a beachside road serves as the main route; your first glimpse of the spectacular views across the bright blue sea makes a very special welcome indeed.

In fact, just around the corner from Old Nice and the Quai des Etats Unis, this acts as the ideal place to watch the Corsica ferries take off, whilst marvelling at the moored yachts. Some of the city’s most cosmopolitan nightclubs are found here, so it’s a good stop after dinner where you can dance the night away.

The medieval warren of narrow alleys and open-air flower and fish markets that make up the old town lie in sharp contrast with Nice’s lively sea front, where the pebble beach stretches the length of the Bay of Angels. The path which runs along the bay (Promenades des Anglais) makes a great palm-lined route for an enjoyable afternoon stroll and fresh sea air.

Nice is also home to plenty of leading museums; of particular noteworthiness is the Matisse Museum at av. Des Arenes where some of the artist’s works and personal possessions are displayed. The baroque 17th century Palais Lascaris back in the old town is worth a look, as is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral.

Furthermore, in the broad and bustling avenues of Nice's city centre you can browse Provencal fabrics, local perfumes and elegant French fashions and take home a few memoirs from your trip.
