If you are thinking of moving to the East Midlands there are a few things that you should know that may sway your decision and help you to choose to rent property in Leicester. The city of Leicester lies on the River Soar and on the edge of the English National Forest. The population of the city is 285,100 as of 2004 with 441,213 people residing in the greater urban area. This makes Leicester one of the top 10 most populated cities in all of England. The City has plenty of great transport links with the rest of the country. The M1 motorway, which connects Leeds with London, is very close by. This motorway not only connects you to London and Leeds but allows you to join 9 other motorways allowing you easy and quick access to drive to all most any park of the country. The Midlands Main Line runs through the city allowing you to reach London’s new St Pancras International station in little over an hour. The city has a rich history and is supposedly founded by the mythical King of Britain King Leir. The city is also said to be the site of his burial chamber after Queen Cordelia buried her father in an underground chamber, dedicated to the Roman god Janus, beneath the River Soars. In fact every year there is a celebration of the Roman god held near the supposed burial site of King Leir. The city has a rich Roman and Celtic History and grew in prominence throughout the medieval period. King Leir is not the only King to be buried in Leicester, King Richard III is also buried in the city with a tomb at Leicester cathedral, though legend has it he was actually thrown in the River Soars. The City today is mostly Victorian in look with a few modern developments that have blended seamlessly in to the look of the city. At the heart of the city is the Clock tower which is overlooked by two shopping centers and the main streets in Leicester. The largest covered market in Europe is just a stones throw from the Clock tower making Leicester a truly great shopping city.
