Airmiles Go From Strength To Strength

By: Andrew Regan

Everyone likes to get something for nothing. Whether it’s part of a ‘buy-one get-one-free’ deal, a complimentary lunch or any number of other special, promotional offers where the consumer receives a little something extra for no added effort or expense on their behalf. And this is why loyalty programs have become increasingly popular in recent times, as retailers attempt to not only get new customers on board, but keep existing customers coming back.

Of course, anybody who regularly shops at the larger supermarket chains will no doubt be aware of such schemes, whereby the consumer is rewarded for simply doing what they would normally do. But from the retailer’s point of view, they are only too aware of how easy it is for their regular customers to be tempted to a competitor’s store instead, which is why such loyalty programmes are beneficial to all parties concerned. These days, it is no longer enough to simply offer good products and services; consumers have come to expect more bang for their buck than ever before.

One of the earliest and subsequently most popular customer loyalty initiatives was the Airmiles travel rewards scheme, which has gone from strength to strength since it was first launched in the UK in 1988 and now has millions of members. Whilst Airmiles in the UK is an entirely separate scheme, the overall model was subsequently launched around the globe - from North America and Europe, to the Middle East.

But in keeping with the customer-centred ethos of most modern loyalty schemes, Airmiles can now be accrued through general shopping, whereas originally it was only possible to do so through paying directly for flights. Indeed, the people who benefited mostly from this were business travellers, or anyone who used air transport on a regular basis.

Now though, whether someone is topping their car up at the petrol station, getting their groceries in or spending money on countless retail websites, it’s possible to quickly build up a healthy balance of Airmiles, and this is great news by just spending money on everyday things.

Furthermore, with the use of Airmiles Credit Cards available this essentially means that wherever someone happens to be in the world they can accumulate valuable points which can be redeemed against free flights (including taxes) to hundreds of destinations around the globe.

Ultimately though, this helps to demonstrate that businesses are more focused than ever not only in terms of providing quality goods and services, but in their desire to keep their customers coming back. As such, customer loyalty schemes have proven to be a fantastic way for businesses to give customers the incentive to return.
