The capital and second most populated city in the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi is an exciting and culturally unique city to visit. With less than half a million permanent residents and such high earnings gained from tourism and oil, it proves to be one of the richest cities in the world. There are a huge range of high quality attractions to visit throughout the city and one of the most popular of these is the Al Hosn Palace. As the oldest building in Abu Dhabi, the Al Hosn Palace - or White Fort - is popular with both tourists and locals alike. Built in 1793, the building was originally the main residence of the former ruling family before falling into disrepair. The building has since been renovated several times and today is the home of The Cultural Foundation. A visit to the Al Hosn Palace allows you to see some of Abu Dhabi's most interesting artefacts and oldest paintings. Continuing with a historical focus, the Heritage Village provides an opportunity to see what Bedouin life was like before oil was discovered. An amazing contrast to the current city, the exhibition displays mud houses and a more rustic poorer period that not too long ago was the reality for Abu Dhabi residents. Although it may not be the kind of exhibitions you would normally seek on a holiday, the Abu Dhabi petroleum exhibition provides a unique, exciting afternoon that you will probably never experience on any other holiday. Since this is the focus of Abu Dhabi's wealth, petroleum is very important to its residents and the exhibition allows you to delve deeper into Abu Dhabi culture. Highlighting how the city originally discovered the oil and its development to be one of the richest cities in the world, the exhibition is particularly interesting if you have had the chance to explore the Heritage Village as well. The petroleum exhibition is located on The Corniche, one of Abu Dhabi's most popular tourist and local destinations - a seafront road; it extends around 6km in front of Abu Dhabi's beautiful coastline. Surrounded by beautiful gardens that feature luxury water fountains and plants from around the world, The Corniche is ideal for relaxing on a sunny afternoon in Abu Dhabi. What's more, The Corniche has been developed with picnic tables and cycle routes, which helps to make it as picturesque, as it is popular for residents and tourists alike. Therefore, thanks to the extravagant wealth of Abu Dhabi, the city offers plenty of well-maintained and beautiful attractions for both the resident and tourist to enjoy.
