A quick guide to Leicestershire

Leicestershire is home to much more than most people think. There are so many attractions and places of interest, not to mention great shopping, beautiful countryside and fantastic nights out making Leicestershire a very attractive place to live.

One top attraction not to be missed is the National Space Centre in Leicester; the centre has real rockets and some fun interactive challenges and displays. It also plays host to a number of exhibitions throughout the year from Star Wars and Doctor Who to real life astronauts.

There are a number of adventure parks in the area too to keep kids happy with fun-packed Twinlakes Park near Melton Mowbray, as well as Snibston Discovery Park near Coalville. Twycross Zoo near Market Bosworth is another fantastic family day out, whilst Conkers at the heart of the National Forest, and Wistow Maze near Kibworth, will keep youngsters entertained for hours.

Leicestershire rich in history too. Leicester was an important Roman town and evidence of its Roman past can still be seen at the Jewry Wall Museum. The city also has a strong medieval history to and evidence of this can still be seen in the city centre today. for more historical sites take a trip around the magnificent Belvoir Castle near Melton Mowbray or take a relaxing boat ride down the Grand Union Canal.

The Battle that effectively ended the War of the Roses and saw the start of the Tudor dynasty took place in Bosworth in west Leicestershire. You can take a trip to the visitor’s centre where you can learn all about the battle which claimed the life of King Richard III and saw Henry Tudor become Henry VII.

The county boasts many splendid stately homes including the 17th century Stanford Hall and the majestic Belvoir Castle. Medieval jousting festivals are often held at Belvoir, and also at Rockingham Castle near Market Harborough.
