Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands with a growing population nearing 300,000, making it one of the top 20 biggest cities in England. Leicester as an unusually high proportion of people aged under 35 with the largest group being under 15’s who represent 20% of the population. The ratio between men and women is fairly equal with 51% women and 49% men. Leicester is the most ethnically diverse city in England with 36% of the population being Black, Asian or from other ethnic minority backgrounds, the national the average is just 13%.

The city of Leicester has a varied housing stock of just over 110,000 dwellings. 25% of these dwellings are detached houses or bungalows, flats and apartments of one description or another make up around 20% of the dwellings, while the remainder of the accommodation is made up of terraced or semi-detached housing. 33% of these dwellings are occupied by single people, higher than the national average of around 30%. Whilst 60% of all the housing is occupied by the owner, 40% are rented properties, much higher than the national average of just 29%.

Leicester could be described as a middle class city with 55% of the population of being classed as ‘middle-class’, by falling into the C1 and C2 bands. 27% are classed as ‘working-class’ by falling in to the D and E bands, the remaining 19% are placed into bands A and B. Over 75% of working people in the city are in full-time employment.
The people of Leicester are not fans of commuting with 60% living just 3 miles from where they work, if you expand it to further we find 75% of the working population live with in 6 miles of their place of work. The number who drives to work is still relatively high with only 17,000 of 112,000 working people using the bus to get to work, however a high proportion of people are choosing the health alternative and walk to work.
Clearly walking to work is having benefits as only 10% of the population feel they are not in good health.
