A Match Made In Heaven: Manchester United and the Theatre of Dreams

By: Adam Singleton

Football is undoubtedly one of the most popular sports in the world, drawing in millions of fans from Europe to Asia and beyond. Indeed, many people have argued that football – or soccer as it’s known in the US – is the new religion, given the fervour with which countless people follow their team.

However, whilst football fans generally follow their own country when it comes to international football, the same can’t be said for the domestic game, with glamour teams such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United attracting fans from across the globe.

Indeed, it is estimated that Manchester United have a fan-base of over 330 million people, which isn’t bad considering the population of England stands at around 50 million people. But as a football club with such a glorious and illustrious past, it’s easy to see why they are followed fanatically by so many people across all the major continents.

Of course, it helps that they play in such a prestigious league, with other glamour clubs such as Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool also attracting a large following from around the globe. The English Premier League is often cited as being one of the most exciting leagues in the world, with action and controversy every bit as prevalent as speed, skill and athleticism from the players on display throughout the league.

But it is teams such as Manchester United that take the division onto the next level. And if the English Premier League is the Hollywood of the football world, then it is the team from Old Trafford that is the A-List celebrity and star attraction.

Affectionately known as the Theatre of Dreams, Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium has a five-star rating by UEFA – the only facility in the UK to be given this status - and can accommodate close to 80,000 spectators. But as impressive as the stadium is, it is the events that have taken place on the pitch over the past century or so that has elevated the club to superstar status.

Indeed, with the exception of the 1974-1975 season, Manchester United has played in the top division of English football since 1938. Furthermore, they were the first English team to win the European Cup and currently hold the record for the most FA Cup triumphs.

And it is this long and illustrious past combined with a glamorous and successful present that means Manchester United are now considered to be the one of the richest and most valuable sports’ club in the world. For fans of any football club – Manchester United or otherwise – it is hard not to be mesmerised by the glam and glitz of what has become one of the world’s biggest football clubs. And with such a massive global following, this only serves to emphasise that football may indeed be the new religion.
