The timeshare first came to life in Europe during the 1960’s. The growing popularity or commercial jets and the 60’s adventurous side combined to change the face of travel for ever. People were becoming more and more interested in holidays abroad and tourism was starting to become a very big business. A French development company saw continued and rapid growth of the travel market and sort to capitalize on this by launching a new type of holiday, the timeshare. The very first resort was SuperDevoluy a ski resort in the French Alps. To attract people to this new venture the company famously came up with the slogan ‘No need to rent the room; buy the hotel, its cheaper’ and with that the timeshare was born. At the same time as the French company The Societe des Grands Travaux de Marseille started there timeshare business just over the Alps a Swiss company, Hapimag, were developing there own resorts. They bought property in Switzerland, Italy and Spain and for the first time allowed customers a choice of destinations. The first timeshare available in the United States was offer on the Island of Kauai in 1969. Those interested in these timeshares were offered weeks, which were sold on a leasehold basis. They were also the very first company to offer a points system that gives the timeshare owner more options. The first timeshare in continental U.S was offered in Florida. Throughout the 1970’s many condos were turned into timeshare resorts. In 1973 the every first deed ownership was offered. In 1974 owners were given a new flexible option to exchange weeks between a number of different timeshare resorts. This was a highly attractive option of timeshare owners who had never had such freedom before. Toward the end of the 70’s and throughout the 80’s timeshare grew in popularity. Driven by the increase in demand timeshare resorts began to appear across the world. Timeshare appealed to people from all backgrounds. Wealthy individuals would use them to travel to exotic resorts while families and working class people would use them to have a first class holiday at affordable prices. By the 1990’s timeshare had become a household name and had expanded to almost every corner of the earth. Seeing the huge success of many timeshare companies large hotel chains such as Marriot, Sheraton, Ramada and Hilton started offering there own timeshare resorts. Today the timeshares market is a multi-billion dollar industry which is expected to grow even further in the future.
