For many centuries the method called "fly fishing" has been a popular method, of catching fish, employed by anglers worldwide. Today the sport continues to grow in popularity globally with numerous fly fishing resorts in Europe (Scotland, Norway etc) and the USA (Alaska, Colorado etc.). The sports popularity expands due, in part, to the unique skills required and incredible challenges offered in order to catch a fish. Most important in fly fishing is the piece of equipment known as the fly (hence the name!). Flies are artificial lures which have been created using various materials but usually following a well known fly pattern. Different fly patterns are often used in different locations and weathers and if one fails to work then it is likely that a change to another pattern will lead to success. Some fly patterns have been used in fly fishing for a great many years and are widely known to anglers. These fly patterns have been created in such a way that they appear, in looks and the way in which they move, to the fish that they fool it into thinking it is a natural food source. Great skill is required in designing a fly which moves correctly while also looking like a real creature while on or in the water. Also of extreme importance, in fly fishing, are the other items of equipment such as the fishing rod, line and reel. Each item has to be finely crafted to ensure that it is sufficiently strong to haul in some incredibly large fish. It is also of extreme importance that all of the fly fishing equipment is, when put together, finely balanced. All fly fishing equipment should be extremely strong yet, at the same time, as light as possible. The rod should also be sufficiently flexible to ensure a good cast in even the most restricted of spaces (such as when casting from below a steep bank or when there are overhanging branches and the likes). Fly fishing rods vary in length from as short as 7 ft to as long as 9 ft . Anything less than 8 ft is generally considered a short rod but I have seen some extremely short hand made fly fishing rods which are awesome in any conditions. High on the list of wanted fly fishing equipment of many anglers of today is a set of high quality waders. Modern materials have been created which allow lightweight waders to be "breathable" which means that the angler can remain dry and cool while fly fishing in the river. Besides waders there are many other items and accessories which vary in importance from the necessary to the superfluous. Taking up fly fishing is rather easy as once you have your basic fly fishing equipment you can upgrade as your budget allows. You can start with a cheap fly fishing kit which can be obtained online or offline (from most sports retailers). Before you take to the waters I would advise that you take a short course or, at the least, a couple of lessons and many places offer the ability to hire equipment which can further reduce your initial outlay. Fly fishing can prove addictive and, after only a few trips, you may well find yourself looking to make opportunities for yourself to go fishing. This is great if you live near suitable waters but for most of use we have to plan well in advance as getting to the best fly fishing spots often involves a fair bit of travel, especially if visiting far off places such as Scotland or Norway (or if you live in that part of the world, Alaska or Colorado). Wherever you choose to indulge in the sport you are almost guaranteed to enjoy it to the full. Even if the weather is foul and you fail to catch a single fish you will still have enjoyed the day, especially if you have been fishing with friends (who may have been more successful than yourself).
