One of my favourite shows these days is called How I Meet Your Mother. If you have yet to see it, think Friends, but to use a Barney Stinson quote, much more awesome. The following is a synopsis of the show, my favourite character Barney Stinson, the moral code he lives by called The Bro Code, and the episode about the escort, which is just here to prove the deviousness of the Barney Stinson character. How I Met Your Mother How I Met Your Mother is a CBS sitcom, which premiered on September 19, 2005. The plot of the show revolves around the main character, Ted Mosby, who is recounting to his son and daughter the events that led up to meeting their mother. The other main characters include his ex-girlfriend Robin Scherbatsky, his best friend Marshall Eriksen along with his wife Lily Aldrin and of course my personal favourite, Barney Stinson. Barney Stinson In How I Met Your Mother the Barney Stinson character is opposed to his best friend Ted Mosby settling down and attempts to convince, bride and even trick him into remaining single. Always wearing a suit and willing to offer his opinion, this self-professed womanizer offers many devious strategies designed to help Ted meet women. The early episodes described Barney as ‘utterly devoid of morality’, however it is revealed that this is untrue as Barney lives by the Bro Code, which are his own set of rules. The Bro Code The Bro Code, stated by Barney many times throughout the show, is a set of written rules for all Bros to follow. Here are two samples: ARTICLE 58 If a Bro, for whatever reason, becomes aware of another Bro's girlfriend's birthday and/or anniversary date, he shall endeavour to make that information available to his Bro, regardless of whether he thinks his Bro already knows. ARTICLE 60 Should a Bro be near to closing with a girl, his Bro shall do anything within his means to ensure the desired outcome, up to and including the seduction of said girl's wildly unattractive cousin/friend/mother. The Escort Barney’s deviousness can be shown in the episode entitled ‘Mary the Paralegal’. The group are attending an awards ceremony for Robin in which Ted finds himself dateless. Barney suggests the idea of getting Ted an escort, which Ted immediately dismisses because he thinks ‘it’s gross’. Barney lambastes Ted on his ‘puritanical hang-up’ about the ‘worlds oldest profession’, and ends up calling him an escort anyway named Mary. At the end of the episode Barney rents Ted and Mary a hotel room and later reveals to the rest of the group that Mary is not actually an escort, but in reality a paralegal that lives in his building. Whatever point he was attempting to make about hiring an escort is lost, as Ted, after being shot down by Mary once he confessed that he thought she was an escort, never checked out of the hotel room and proceeded to rack up the charges with bottles of Dom Perignon and massages. Where Art Meets Life In the show there are many references to fictional websites, such as Barney’s Blog, Barney's Video Resume, TedMosbyIsAJerk.com and CanadianSexActs.org, all of which have since been made into real sites. One of the best external marketing tactics from the show is the Bro Code, supposedly written by Barney Stinson, which was actually published in 2008.
