A Brief Guide to Leeds

Leeds is the largest city in Yorkshire. According to the 2001 census the population of Leeds is 443,247, when taking in the wider metropolitan borough the population is 761,200 making it one of the eighth largest cities outside London.

Leeds is quickly establishing itself as one of the greatest cities in the UK and is regarded as one of the best city break destination in Britain. This reputation has been solidified by numerous awards and accolades. It has been voted Condé Nast Traveler magazine Readers' Awards as the "UK's favourite city" in 2004, "Visitor city of the year" by The Good Britain Guide in 2005 and "Best English city to visit outside London" in 2005. Leeds attracts around 1.5million staying guests each year, a trend which many expect to increase, while 10 million visit on day trips to the city. It is estimated that £735 million is generated each year through tourism.

Some of the attractions that draw so many visitors include, Leeds Art Gallery, Royal Armouries, the Henry Moore Institute and the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Leeds is also the only city outside London to have both its own ballet and opera companies, the internationally acclaimed Northern Ballet Theatre and Opera North. There are many, many other landmarks and attraction that draw millions to the city.

The city is lucky to be geographically central in the UK and with rail, road and air transport links the city is easily accessible from most of the country. The city is also easily accessible to Europe as the cities airport grows rapidly with over 450 flights a week connecting to 70 European business and holiday destinations.

Leeds is one of the best shopping destinations in the UK and has been dubbed by Lonely Planet as the ‘Knightsbridge of the North’. The city has a wide variety of shops from the like of Harvey Nichols and designers stores by Louis Vuitton to the very best of the high street and independent stores. One of the most popular shopping areas is the Victorian Quarter; several original Victorian shopping arcades are connected together by stained glass roofing to the entirety of Queen Victoria Street. The Quarter is a truly attractive shopping complex which is now well over 100 years old.
