By: Ben Binding-27115

Doncaster or 'Donny' as it is affectionately known is a large town in South Yorkshire. Located 20 miles from Sheffield the city, as of 2001, has a population of 67,977, when combined with Bentley and Armthorpe it creates an urban area of 127,851 people.

Perhaps unbeknown to most people is Doncaster’s rich Roman Heritage. Danvum as it was known in Roman times was built original as a fort at the crossing of the river Don in 1 AD. Doncaster quickly became an important town in Roman Britain and was a staging post between the towns of Lincoln and York. The town was also home to Crispus, son of Constantine the Great who ruled Rome from York for many years. The town remained crucial in the Roman Empire until the eventual withdraw of Rome from Britain. Still much of Doncaster’s Roman history remains unknown as much of it lies under buildings making it impossible to excavate the remains.

The town has come along way from its Roman origins. Buildings from many periods of its history, from medieval to Victorian times can still be found in the town including St. George’s Minster and the 12th century Coinsbrough Castle. Modern developments are starting to make their mark on the town to. The Frenchgate development is a massive shopping and transport centre in the heart of the town. Frenchgate is the central bus terminus for the town as well as having a train link to the nearby Doncaster station. The Center is also a great shopping mall. After a multi million pound refurbishment it is one of the premier shopping centres in South Yorkshire.

8 miles form the city can be found the Robbin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield which gives Doncaster easy and quick links to the rest of Great Britain and Europe. Doncaster’s railway is an important stop on the east coast mail line which runs between London and Edinburgh as well as many other towns such as York, Leeds and Newcastle. These great links make Doncaster one of the most connected cities in Yorkshire and is one of the many reasons why Doncaster proves to be such a popular place to live.
