5 Reasons to Collect First Day Covers and Stamp Sheets

By: Cara Redman

1 – Interest

Covers follow all themes imaginable and they are available back to the first stamp (the Penny Black). Finding one that interests you or fits into a collection is very possible. I collect things featuring Children’s characters. Covers have been produced from stamps featuring Rupert, Bagpuss, the Clangers, Paddington Bear and Winnie the Pooh. My Winnie the Pooh cover originally cost £3 signed by Christopher Milne (Christopher Robin), but is now worth at least £150.

2 – Education

Covers can educate you and open your eyes to new things. Covers are produced for every stamp issue released by Royal Mail. This means they follow many themes, for example this year British stamps celebrate the James Bond, the Olympics, the Red Arrows and RAF Falcons. These are just a few! As you can see – there is something for everyone.

3 – A Piece of History

Covers are often a part of history and are often released to commemorate momentous occasions. For example, covers were made to commemorate the year England won the World Cup (1966). Signed versions by members of the winning team, can now be worth hundreds of pounds. Cover producer, Buckingham Covers produced covers for the football world cup (2006) and managed to get the 10 remaining, original players to sign them. This is a great achievement for any producer and a lovely item to add to any football collections.

4 – Investment Potential

Choosing carefully the right covers to buy can turn out to be an investment. Knowing what to buy and when can provide you with a very valuable collection. Many people see the hobby as a great and fun way to invest money for grandchildren.

5 – Signatures/Autographs

Collecting covers is also a great way to collect autographs. Relevant or famous signatories now sign covers. For example James Bond covers have recently been autographed by Roger Moore (007 himself), Richard Kiel (Jaws) and many more. Past covers have been signed by Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill and even Royalty.
