3 Useful Wireless Gadgets for your Home

By: Joe Liaz

New and innovative technologies have been coming out faster than most people can keep up but the average household isn't taking advantage of most of it yet. Technology in most homes usually consists of 1-3 T.V's, a wireless home network and 1-3 computers and laptops on that network. Many people don't realize that there are a lot of new gadgets out there that can use their wireless network in new and interesting ways.

1) Wireless Printer.

A wireless printer can connect to your wireless network as easily as any computer or laptop. They can do this because they have a built in Wireless Network Interface Card. All you need to do to join the network is choose yours from the list of available networks then enter your password/encryption if you have it. This isn't some amazing new device new added functionality to a device already in most homes. Having your printer on the network means that any computer connected to your network can use that printer once they have added it. The advantages of this are that: you can print from anywhere within range of your wireless signal (around 100ft usually). You can put the printer wherever you want as long as there is a power outlet (it doesn't need to be right beside your computer). Finally many computers and devices can easily share the same printer which can potentially save money on buying multiple printers.

2) Digital Picture Frame

A digital picture frame is basically a picture frame with a digital screen in it that instead of just showing one picture can cycle through many pictures showing entire photo albums in one frame. This is a great solution if you have a lot of pictures but are running out of places to put them. It also allows you to show off all your pictures in your home without having to spend money to print them all out. Traditionally to use a digital picture frame you would need to put the SD card from your camera into it to use it because they dont have their own internal memory or if they did you would need to connect your computer to the frame to transfer over the pictures. Now there are wireless Digital Picture Frames that allow you to transfer your pictures to the frame without using any cables or having to use your camera's memory card. This allows you to change what pictures are on the frame more easily and often, keeping it more up to date. Some of the new frames even come with a Flikr account. Flikr is a website where people can post their pictures, you can set up the frame to get pictures from the website. The frames come in various shapes and sizes and are a great way to show your pictures in your house.

3) VOIP Phones

VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is the practice of communication voice over the internet. You can do this from your computer, use VOIP phones as is becoming increasingly common. VoIP is often cheaper than regular landlines because you are using your existing internet connection to talk over the phone, you don't have to worry about phone lines. Some of the most popular VOIP companies include Skype and Vonage. Many manufactorures are now selling wireless VOIP phones that connect to your wireless network and allow you to make and recieve calls. You get a regular phone number and can call regular phones just as easily as dialing the number. One of the downsides to this service is that if your internet connection goes down that means that your phone service goes down as well. But VOIP phones are still well worth the price and are becoming more and more common.

These are just 3 of the new great technologies out there that can be very useful around the house.
