21 This Year & Still a Princess - The Holiday Barbie Doll

By: Heather Wilson

As the snowflakes fall, somewhere a Holiday Barbie Doll is waiting for you, sparkling in her shimmering gown. In 2008 the Holiday Barbie doll celebrated her 20th birthday (or Christmas!). For many little (and big) girls, Christmas would not be the same without a Holiday Barbie doll to share it with. Most of us have childhood memories of receiving a wonderful Barbie gift from under the tree and since 1998 we have an Official Holiday Barbie doll to collect every year.

Happy Holiday Barbie Doll first glided off the production line in 1988, a new model was made each year up until 1998, she was initially created after the success of the first Barbie that was aimed at collectors. This doll was not produced in great numbers, but it was an instant hit and consequently doll collectors snapped up everyone they could find. If you want to add one of these Rhapsody in Blue dolls to your collection, you can expect to pay about five hundred dollars.

Realizing they were onto something; Mattel designed and released the very first Holiday Barbie Doll back in 1988. Synonymous with the '66 Barbie, she had a mass of blond tresses, a film star face and sported a large silver bow in her hair. Her sparkly red tulle gown is complemented with a white satin sash and bow. She was an instant sell out and could be found almost straight away for re-sale at a vastly increased price.

The story was the same pretty much until after 1994, when the 35th Anniversary Barbie doll, a reproduction of the original 1959 doll was released. Doll collectors and Barbie collectors went nuts over her and she very quickly was a sell out, being hoarded by the collectors. Word got around and the Barbie doll craze was at its peak with doll collectors buying every Holiday Barbie doll they could for the chance to sell them on at a large profit.

In order to counteract this hoarding behavior, Mattel simply made more of each doll and she remained as popular as ever just without the craze factor and the excessive price tag on the secondary market. After 1998 the 'Happy' was lost from her title and more individual designs emerged, the first of which was Millennium Princess Barbie in 1999. Created to celebrate and welcome the year 2000.

To bring us right up to date, the 2009 and 21st Holiday Barbie Doll has recently been released. She is also the Holiday Barbie doll to mark Barbie's 50th anniversary. Dressed in a stunning layered pink and gold gown that twinkles with pink rhinestones. A gold lame bodice adds to the elegance with a bow at the back. Like many of the Holiday Barbie doll models, she is also available in an African American model.

The last few years release of the Holiday Barbie Doll, while they remain a beautiful collectible doll don't command such a high price when re-sold. If you shop around you can often pick them up very reasonably and below their suggested value.
